Today propane is the market leader in alternative fuels for the automotive sector and powers more than 4 million vehicles in more than 38 countries. The reason is clear. Propane provides fleet managers with a cost-effective, clean, safe and reliable alternative fuel.

Tests conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show that propane vehicles can produce 30 percent to 90 percent less carbon monoxide and about 50 percent fewer toxics and other smog-producing emissions than gasoline engines.

Many fleets have reported 2 to 3 years longer service life and extended intervals between required maintenance. Spark plugs from a propane vehicle last from 80,000 to 100,000 miles and propane engines can last 2 to 3 times longer than gasoline or diesel engines.

The Illinois Green Fleet Program is a voluntary program where businesses gain recognition and additional marketing opportunities for having clean, green, domestic, renewable, American Fuel Vehicles (AFV) in their fleet.  It is a program to recognize a fleet manager’s progressive efforts in using environmentally friendly vehicles and fuels to improve air quality while promoting our domestic fuels for greater national energy security.

Since this is voluntary, the Illinois Green Fleet program has no regulatory components. This is the type of cooperative program that benefits the agency as well as businesses without the need for regulatory oversight. The Illinois EPA will survey prospective fleets annually regarding the number of American Fuel Vehicles in the fleet and the level of fuel usage. Based on the answers to the survey as compared to established criteria, a fleet is invited to become designated as an Illinois Green Fleet or to be upgraded in designation and be recognized as such.

A designated Illinois Green Fleet will benefit from the recognition and marketing inherent in the program. In addition to the website, the Illinois Green Fleets Program has a periodic newsletter, informational materials, and fleet recognition events. The Illinois EPA will coordinate with several organizations in distributing the newsletter and other marketing materials to businesses and local governments throughout the State.
